The Sanjeevi Viruththam, a revered ancient text, narrates the poignant and powerful legend of Sanjeevi Amman, a divine figure worshipped with great reverence by the people of the Kappalēru lineage.

Long ago, in an era shrouded in time, a strikingly beautiful young woman from the Kappalēru community caught the attention of a local Zamindar (feudal lord). Enchanted by her beauty, the Zamindar became infatuated and attempted to possess her through various means. Tensions escalated in response to his relentless pursuit, leading to a violent confrontation. During this conflict, the young woman was tragically beheaded and killed, an act that would later become central to her deification.

It is believed that her severed head, symbolizing immense sacrifice and spiritual strength, was preserved and venerated by the Kappalēru people. Initially, the head was worshipped in the very forest where the incident occurred—marking the beginning of her transformation from a victim of violence to a divine mother figure.

Over time, as devotion to her grew, a temple was established at Sittaiyan Kottai (Sittaiyan Fort), where devotees began offering regular prayers. This shrine became the main center of worship for Sanjeevi Amman, particularly venerating her severed head as a divine relic.

However, Sanjeevi Viruththam goes even further to describe an extraordinary spiritual phenomenon—the dismembered parts of Sanjeevi Amman's body were sanctified and enshrined in different locations, turning her into a symbol of divine omnipresence across regions:

• Her hands are believed to have been taken and enshrined at the Dhargha in Dharapuram, where they are revered with sacred rituals.

• Her torso (body) is said to be preserved and worshipped at the Madamanai in Pulavadi, another site of profound spiritual importance.

• Her feet were carried to the Chamundi Hills temple in Mysuru, where they became part of the divine embodiment worshipped in the renowned shrine of Chamundeshwari Devi.

This unique dispersal of her body parts to sacred locations symbolizes Sanjeevi Amman’s transcendence beyond physical suffering, representing her divine presence and protection across different regions and communities.

The Sanjeevi Viruththam records a tragic historical incident and elevates it into a tale of courage, sacrifice, and spiritual immortality.
