My Meeting with Smt Umashree

My Special Encounter with Smt. Umashree at Devanga Mutt, Nelamangala

Some moments in life are etched in memory forever, and meeting the renowned actress and former minister Smt. Umashree was one such unforgettable experience for me. On July 27th, 2018, I was honored to meet her at the Devanga Mutt in Kempalinganahalli Village, located on Shivaganga Road, Nelamangala, Bangalore.

It was a special day for me, not only because I was at the revered Devanga Mutt but also because I got the opportunity to meet one of the most celebrated figures in Karnataka's film and political arenas. The introduction was graciously made by Sri Sri Sri Dayanandapuri Swamiji, the revered head of the Devanga Mutt, who introduced me to Smt. Umashree. Although I was aware of her impressive body of work both on-screen and in politics, meeting her in person left a lasting impact on me.

What struck me most during this meeting was her humility. Despite being a prominent public figure—having starred in over 400 Kannada films and served as a former Minister for Women and Child Development in Karnataka—she sat humbly on the floor, engaging with people as though she were one of them. There was no air of superiority; instead, she responded to the greetings and questions from everyone in the Mutt with warmth and grace.

I feel deeply thankful to Sri Sri Sri Dayanandapuri Swamiji for giving me this opportunity and to Umashree Madam for her kindness. I also managed to capture this moment with a photograph alongside my brother K Santhosh Kumar, making it a memory I will always cherish.

About Smt. Umashree: A Multifaceted Personality

Umashree, born May 10, 1957, is a true powerhouse in Kannada cinema and Indian politics. Her journey from a village theatre artist to a celebrated actress and a respected politician is truly inspiring. Let's take a deeper look into her life, career, and achievements.

Career in Cinema

Umashree’s contribution to Kannada cinema is nothing short of remarkable. Throughout her career, she has acted in more than 400 films, predominantly in comic roles. She is best known for her exceptional talent in portraying humor with ease, often playing characters that bring comic relief to the audience. However, her talent extends beyond comedy, as seen in her more serious and impactful roles, including her award-winning performance in Gulabi Talkies (2008).

Her film career began in 1984 with her debut in Anubhava, where she immediately earned accolades for her performance. However, before this official debut, she had appeared in the 1980 film Bangarada Jinke, directed by T. S. Nagabharana. Over the years, Umashree has worked with some of the most respected directors and actors in the industry, including N. S. Rao, Dinesh, Dwarakish, Mysore Lokesh, Sihi Kahi Chandru, Ramesh Bhat, and many more. Her collaborations with directors like Fritz Bennewitz, B.V. Karanth, Girish Karnad, and T.S. Nagabharana have further enriched her impressive work.

Her versatility as an actress has made her a household name in Karnataka. Whether it’s a light-hearted comedy or a socially relevant drama, Umashree has portrayed a wide range of characters that have left a lasting impression on her audience. One of her most critically acclaimed roles was in Gulabi Talkies, which earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress in 2008. Her portrayal of Gulabi, a midwife living in a coastal village, was a nuanced and profoundly moving performance that showcased her ability to take on complex roles.

Political Career

In addition to her successful film career, Umashree has also had a distinguished political career. In 2013, she was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Karnataka under the Siddaramaiah government. During her tenure, she served as the Minister for Women and Child Development, Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, and Kannada Language and Culture. Her time as a minister was marked by her strong advocacy for women’s rights, cultural preservation, and social justice.

What makes Umashree truly admirable is her ability to balance her artistic pursuits with her responsibilities in public service. As a politician, she has always remained connected to her roots, participating actively in social causes, particularly those aimed at uplifting rural women and the economically disadvantaged. Her passion for social work was evident even before her political career, as she used her fame and influence to bring attention to the struggles faced by people in rural Karnataka.

Early Life and Connection to the Devanga Community

Umashree was born into the Devanga weavers community, which is known for its rich history in weaving and textile production. This connection to her roots has always remained strong, and she has been an advocate for her community’s welfare. Throughout her career, Umashree has stayed connected to the people of her community, using her platform to raise awareness about their issues and fight for their rights.

Her involvement in village and amateur theatre gave her the foundation to later excel in professional cinema. She honed her skills in mythological and professional drama, often performing in rural villages to highlight social issues and empower marginalized communities. She has worked with some of the most respected names in theatre, including Rangasampada, a renowned amateur theatre group in Bangalore.
